Functional Capacity Assessment

What is a Functional Capacity Assessment?

A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) evaluates a person’s ability to perform specific tasks related to daily living, work, or other activities. It is commonly used in medical, vocational, and educational contexts. During an FCA, we assess various functional domains, such as physical abilities (e.g., lifting, carrying, standing), cognitive abilities (e.g., memory, attention), and emotional well-being.

The assessment may involve standardised tests, observations, and interviews, with the goal of determining an individual’s functional limitations, capabilities, and potential accommodations and supports.

Why might I need a Functional Capacity Assessment?

In Australia, these assessments are commonly completed for individuals applying for support (or increased support) through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

The purpose of an FCA is threefold:

Assess Current Functional Status: It evaluates a person’s ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs), considering physical, cognitive, and emotional strengths and support needs. By assessing functional capacity, we gain clarity on an individual’s abilities and limitations, which informs decisions about support and funding.

Identify Support Needs: The assessment identifies areas where the person may require assistance or support. Whether it’s personal hygiene, meal preparation, mobility, or communication, the FCA helps to identify the person’s specific needs.

Tailor Interventions: Based on the assessment results, personalized interventions and support plans are developed. These aim to enhance functional capacity, independence, and overall quality of life.

Our Functional Capacity Assessments measure:

  • Physical Abilities: evaluates an individual’s capacity to perform physical tasks related to work and daily life. This includes lifting, carrying, standing, and mobility
  • Cognitive Abilities: assesses cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and problem-solving.
  • Emotional Well-Being: considers emotional factors that impact functional performance.

The assessment involves practical, real-world tasks relevant to the person’s context.
