What Our Dietitians Do

Dietitians are healthcare professionals who specialise in food and nutrition. They provide expert advice on diet and healthy eating to help individuals manage health conditions, achieve specific health goals, or improve overall well-being. Dietitians assess nutritional needs, develop personalised meal plans, and offer guidance on managing dietary changes.

Benefits of Seeing a Dietitian

Personalised Nutrition Plans: Dietitians tailor nutrition advice to meet individual health needs and preferences, ensuring a balanced and effective diet plan.

Management of Health Conditions: They provide specialised dietary advice for managing conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, gastrointestinal disorders, and food allergies.

Eating Disorder Management: Along with general dietetics our dieticians specialise in the management of both acute and enduring eating disorders.

Weight Management: Dietitians assist with weight loss or gain strategies, helping clients achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

Improved Nutritional Knowledge: Clients gain a better understanding of nutrition, which can lead to healthier food choices and improved lifestyle habits.

Support and Motivation: Regular consultations with a dietitian can provide ongoing support and motivation to help clients stay on track with their dietary goals.

Funding Options and Requirements

Private Funding:

  • Individuals can choose to pay for dietitian services out-of-pocket.
  • Private health insurance may cover some or all of the costs, depending on the policy.
  • No specific requirements other than the ability to pay for services or having appropriate private health insurance coverage.

Medicare:

  • Medicare may cover dietitian services under certain conditions, such as through a Chronic Disease Management Plan (CDM) or an Eating Disorder Management Plan, both arranged by a GP.
  • Eligibility typically requires a referral from a GP, and the number of covered sessions may be limited.
  • Requires a GP referral under a CDM plan or an Eating Disorder Management Plan. The GP will determine eligibility based on the presence of a chronic medical condition or an eating disorder.

NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme):

  • The NDIS may fund dietitian services if they are deemed necessary due to a participant’s disability.
  • To access funding, participants need to provide evidence of the need for dietary support, such as reports or assessments from a doctor or dietitian.
  • The NDIS will not fund services that can be covered by other systems like Medicare or private health insurance.
  • Requires evidence of the need for dietitian services related to a disability. Participants must demonstrate that these services are necessary to achieve their NDIS goals and are not covered by other funding sources.

Next Steps

Obtain a Referral: Your GP will provide a referral to a dietitian if you meet the eligibility criteria, allowing you to access Medicare rebates for dietitian consultations.

Develop a Management Plan: Work with our dietitian and healthcare team to develop a comprehensive management plan tailored to your health needs, ensuring you receive the appropriate dietary support.
